A compound is several cakes built into one unit and wired to a single fuse. You light it once and it fires the lot in sequence, changing character as it works through — which is what separates a compound from a plain barrage. It does not just do the same thing 200 times.

Do not assume a compound needs a field. This is the thing people get wrong about the category. Our compounds run all the way from 8 metre garden pieces to 25 metre display kit, and the shot count tells you very little about which is which — we stock a 244-shot compound rated at 8 metres and a 104-shot one that wants 25.

The classification varies too. Some are 1.4G, some are 1.3G — the more powerful classification — and again that does not track neatly with size.

So there is only one number worth checking before you buy, and it is the safety distance on that specific product page. It is the first figure we list on every one. Pace it out in daylight in every direction from where the firework will stand.
