Sparklers 🎆

Sparklers are the thing everybody remembers from childhood, and the thing most often handled badly. They burn far hotter than people expect — three burning together get as hot as a welding torch.

So: gloves on, one at a time, held at arm's length and away from clothing. Never give one to a child under five. And keep a bucket of water beside you — spent sparklers stay hot for several minutes and should go straight in rather than on the grass.

Handled properly they are brilliant, and they give the youngest guests something to do while the display is being set up.

Sparklers are legally fireworks. They are sold to over-18s only, and setting one off in the street or any public place is an offence anywhere in the UK.
